Resort Trends of 2012

Wanna make your vacation and summer fashionable? Hell YES!  One that pushes Resort from a mere rest stop between two big seasons
to a definitive moment all on its own. It also means more outfits than ever for whatever holiday-fêting, jet-setting, beach-lounging, city-cruising adventure one has in mind. Here's a look at some of the most dominant themes to emerge during the biggest Resort season yet.

Aren't they all lovely?

Best Trends of 2012

New York, London, Milan, and Paris — all the best trends, from all the Spring 2012 collections.

THE BRA-TOP
Many designers showed retro-style bras worn as tops, often paired with a pencil or flared skirt.

THE DOILY LACE
Cut-out floral patterns and large-scale lace was everywhere.

THE CLEAR SHOES
Transparent vinyl was the material of choice for everything from Western-tinged booties to high-heeled oxfords.

THE ROUND SHOULDER
The classic '50s and '60s couture silhouettes of Balenciaga and Dior were out in full force — especially in the form of round-shouldered jackets.

THE BLACK&WHITE
White looked super-crisp, especially when accented with bold black lines.

THE ZIGZAG and CHEVRONS
Whether bold, graphic, or subtle; Missoni-style lines are the new stripes.

THE PLEATS
Pleats in every form — especially accordion and delicate plissé — were prominent.

THE BLUE PRINTS
Tonal blues and blacks gave a moody edge to delicate florals.

THE ONE-SHOULDER
Asymmetric draping added interest to eveningwear.

THE TRANSLUCENT TOPPERS
Raincoats, anoraks, and jackets looked modern in see-through vinyl.

THE TRACK TROUSERS
Tuxedo trousers, meet track pants: dressed down styles, wide-legs, and high-contrast stripes.

THE DROP WAIST
The spirit of the jazz age, captured in drop-waist dresses and deco detailing.

THE DRAPE SKIRT
The straight skirt gets a bit of interest with the addition of draped ruffles, folds, and ruching.

THE SUMMER SUITS
Shorts got down to business with dressed-up blazers.

THE COLD SHOULDERS
Exposed shoulders are having a moment. We spotted them everywhere from draped dresses (left) to jackets and tops.

THE LACE GOWNS
Long, sheer, and dressed up with embroidery and dainty lace.

THE TANGERINE
High-octane orange ruled the runways.

THE WHITE HEELS
Last season's nudes are this season's bright whites.

THE GLOSSY
Iridescent, metallic, pearl, and lots of sparkle.

THE PEPLUMS
Waist flares made appearances on jackets, tops, skirts, jumpsuits, and dresses.

THE MESHED UP
Athletic details, trims, and fabrics were big — high-tech mesh was everywhere.

THE CROPPED TOP
There were all kinds of mini toppers, from tees to tanks.

THE BIG BRIGHT FLORAL
Hyperbright florals were everywhere, including on pants.

THE HOT PANTS
Tiny shorts are hot

THE  ABSOLUTE WHITE
White in all forms: Perforated, frothy, sheer, crisp — and everything in between.

THE PASTEL BLOCK
Sorbet hues in every shade of the rainbow

This is my most favorite trend of all. Calling it COTTON CANDY
